Finding out when specific festivals and holidays in Laos can be difficult. Even though this is Visit Laos Year, tourists still find difficulty in knowing when to go to certain towns such as Vang Vieng, or Luang Prabang.
Unfortunately, we also find it difficult to get accurate dates for events such as Boat Festival ahead of time as many locals don’t seem to know until closer to the time. However, here are a few festivals to be aware of in the coming months.
This article appeared a little too late for the boat racing festival this year. The boat festival in Vientiane took place on 17th - 18th October. The same festivities also took place in Luang Prabang with the Festival of Lights until the 20th October. And, Vang Vieng also joined in with boat racing on the Nam Song along with music, Beerlao, and food aplenty.
Many tourists flocked to the Nam Song River on the 17th October to witness the boat racing and join in with the locals drinking and dancing to celebrate the Boat Festival.
Not much known as yet, but this festival promises camping, live music, cold drinks, food stands, and entertainment somewhere near the limestone karsts Vang Vieng is famous for.

The popular music festival returns to Vang Vieng for an 8th time on 14th December. While this isn’t an official Laos festival or holiday, it will be packed with locals and some clued-up tourists and expats.
Expect three or four stages and tents with everything from EDM to Thai pop stars performing to a knowing crowd. Drinks and food available inside along with seating areas to chill out while waiting for the dance tent to get going.
To save money, watch out for early bird deals where a limited number of tickets get released for a reduced price.
More will appear here as the time approaches, but important dates include Lao New Year, and the Rocket Festival.
But, if you are planning on travelling to Laos around May 2025, then give serious consideration to being in Vang Vieng when the rocket festival takes place.
The rocket festival, or bun bang fai, is one of the most important festivals in the Laos calendar. And, is a not-to-miss event.
